Open a Sirona CBCT with nothing to install

Dentsply Sirona CBCTs (Orthophos 3D, Galileos, Axeos) are exported from Sidexis as DICOM, almost always with a DICOMDIR and a DICOMRM folder full of subfolders. tresD DICOM opens them in your browser, also on a Mac, with nothing to install and without uploading the study anywhere.

What a Sidexis CBCT export looks like

The DICOM exam export («Output → DICOM Exam Export» in Sidexis 4) leaves an index and a folder with several subfolders; the volume is in one of them, often named CT3:

📁 Exported folder, CD or USB stick
📄 DICOMDIR — the index: on its own it has no images
📁 DICOMRM — subfolders
📁 … CT3 — the volume: hundreds of files, one per slice

Other exports leave hundreds of .dcm files directly, without a DICOMDIR. Either way, choose the whole top folder: tresD DICOM walks through the subfolders by itself.

Sidexis can also burn a viewer CD (Wrap&Go, «Create Viewer CD»). According to a Sirona export guide, the export «with viewer» is meant for that viewer and does not contain a compatible DICOM data set: if that is what you have, see the second problem below.

Step by step

  1. Copy the folder to your computer

If you received it on a CD or USB stick, copy the whole folder, for example to the desktop. Reading straight from the CD is slow and can fail halfway through loading.

  2. Open tresD DICOM

Go to tresddicom.com/app with Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox. No sign-up and nothing to install.

  3. Choose the whole folder

Click «📁 DICOM folder» and choose the folder that contains the DICOMDIR and the DICOMRM folder (not the DICOMDIR file alone). You can also drag it onto the window. If you received it as a ZIP or RAR, use the button next to it: no need to unzip it.

tresD DICOM start screen with the DICOM folder and ZIP / RAR buttons
  4. Wait for it to load

Slices appear while the files arrive. If the volume does not fit in the graphics card, it is reduced automatically; the panoramic, the TMJ and the cross-sections per tooth are read at the original resolution.

If it does not open

It says you opened only the DICOMDIR

That file is the CD index; the images are in the folders next to it. Open again and choose the whole folder that contains it.

It says it cannot find DICOM images

It is probably a viewer CD. Ask the clinic or imaging centre for the DICOM export: in Sidexis 4, Output → DICOM Exam Export, keeping «Include main volume» ticked in the «Settings» tab; or Output → Volume for third party manufacturer (DICOM) with the «dcm» format. In older versions, Image → Export → Volume (DICOM). Names change a little between versions.

«This is not the CBCT» appears

You chose the viewer folder (the one with Setup.exe) or a stray file. Open again and choose the study folder.

What you can do next

With the CBCT open you have the axial, coronal and sagittal slices, the 3D render, the panoramic, cross-sections per tooth, the TMJ, the airway, the midpalatal suture, the simulated cephalogram and the superimposition of two CBCTs of the same patient, plus a PDF report. All measurements are indicative. See all features.

Common questions

Do I need Sidexis or the Sirona viewer?

No. tresD DICOM opens the DICOM exported by Sidexis directly in the browser, on Windows, Mac and Linux.

Do I open the DICOMDIR file or the folder?

The whole folder. The DICOMDIR is only the index; tresD DICOM finds the volume inside DICOMRM.

Does it work on a Mac?

Yes, in Safari, Chrome, Edge or Firefox. See also the Mac guide.

Is the CBCT uploaded to the internet?

No. The files are read and processed on your own computer; they are not sent to any server.

Is it free?

Yes: no sign-up, no licences and no limit on studies.
