Open a Morita CBCT with nothing to install

J. Morita CBCTs (Veraview X800, 3D Accuitomo 170, Veraview epocs 3D) are exported from i-Dixel as hundreds of DICOM files that many viewers do not recognise. tresD DICOM opens them in your browser, also on a Mac, with nothing to install and without uploading the study anywhere.

Why other viewers cannot open them

i-Dixel exports one file per axial slice, with names such as SLZ-320.dcm … SLZ+320.dcm. Many of those files lack the header the DICOM standard expects at the start of the file (the «DICM» prefix), so some viewers say they are not DICOM or find no series. tresD DICOM adds it on the fly and opens them like any other.

If the study comes on a CD or USB stick with a Morita program next to it, you do not need that either: choose the whole folder and the viewer finds the images by itself.

Step by step

  1. Copy the folder to your computer

If you received it on a CD or USB stick, copy the whole folder, for example to the desktop. Reading straight from the CD is slow and can fail halfway through loading.

  2. Open tresD DICOM

Go to tresddicom.com/app with Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox. No sign-up and nothing to install.

  3. Choose the whole folder

Click «📁 DICOM folder» and choose the folder with the SLZ… files. You can also drag it onto the window. If you received it as a ZIP or RAR, use the button next to it: no need to unzip it.

tresD DICOM start screen with the DICOM folder and ZIP / RAR buttons
  4. Wait for it to load

Slices appear while the files arrive. If the volume does not fit in the graphics card, it is reduced automatically; the panoramic, the TMJ and the cross-sections per tooth are read at the original resolution.

If it does not open

«This is not the CBCT» appears

You chose the program folder or a stray file. Open again and choose the folder with the slice files.

It says it cannot find DICOM images

Ask the clinic or imaging centre to export the volume as DICOM from i-Dixel: Tools → Export → Save as DICOM file → Axial images (depending on the version, «Export the volume as a DICOM series» or «Save to DICOM File» → «Axial Image»), with the smallest slice interval and thickness.

The grey levels look different from other CBCTs

Morita does not store values in Hounsfield units. Drag with the left mouse button on a slice to adjust brightness and contrast.

What you can do next

With the CBCT open you have the axial, coronal and sagittal slices, the 3D render, the panoramic, cross-sections per tooth, the TMJ, the airway, the simulated cephalogram and the superimposition of two CBCTs of the same patient, plus a PDF report. All measurements are indicative. See all features.

Common questions

Why do other viewers say it is not DICOM?

Because many Morita files start without the standard header («DICM»). Inside they are valid DICOM; tresD DICOM adds that header when opening them, without changing the files.

Do I need i-Dixel or the Morita viewer?

No. tresD DICOM opens the exported files directly in the browser, on Windows, Mac and Linux.

Does it work on a Mac?

Yes, in Safari, Chrome, Edge or Firefox. See also the Mac guide.

Is the CBCT uploaded to the internet?

No. The files are read and processed on your own computer; they are not sent to any server.

Is it free?

Yes: no sign-up, no licences and no limit on studies.
