Open a Vatech CBCT with nothing to install

Vatech CBCTs (PaX-i3D and the Green range) are exported from Ez3D-i or EzDent-i as a folder with hundreds of DICOM files. tresD DICOM opens them in your browser, also on a Mac, without installing the Vatech viewer and without uploading the study anywhere.

How to export from Ez3D-i

With the CBCT open in Ez3D-i, the DICOM export has these options:

☰ Main Menu → Export
💾 Save Type: Local Disk — or CD/DVD to burn a disc
🗜️ Compression: Uncompressed — if it is not offered, «Lossless»
☑ DCM Files — the images: the only thing you need
☐ Viewer · Project File — can stay unticked

Choose a folder (for example a new one on the desktop), click «Save» and wait for «OK». From EzDent-i it is shorter: right-click the CBCT thumbnail → «Export» → «Local Disk». The folder ends up with hundreds of .dcm files, one per slice.

If it comes on a CD or USB stick with the Vatech viewer next to it, you do not need that: choose the whole folder and tresD DICOM finds the images by itself.

Step by step

  1. Copy the folder to your computer

If you received it on a CD or USB stick, copy the whole folder, for example to the desktop. Reading straight from the CD is slow and can fail halfway through loading.

  2. Open tresD DICOM

Go to tresddicom.com/app with Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox. No sign-up and nothing to install.

  3. Choose the whole folder

Click «📁 DICOM folder» and choose the folder with the .dcm files. You can also drag it onto the window. If you received it as a ZIP or RAR, use the button next to it: no need to unzip it.

tresD DICOM start screen with the DICOM folder and ZIP / RAR buttons
  4. Wait for it to load

Slices appear while the files arrive. Large-field Green scans (up to 900 × 900 × 750 voxels) are reduced automatically to fit in the graphics card; the panoramic, the TMJ and the cross-sections per tooth are read at the original resolution.

If it does not open

«This is not the CBCT» appears

You chose the viewer folder or a stray file. Open again and choose the folder with the .dcm files.

It says it cannot find DICOM images

Ask the clinic or imaging centre to export the volume from Ez3D-i: Main Menu → Export, «Local Disk», «Uncompressed» (or «Lossless») and the «DCM Files» box ticked.

«tresD DICOM opens CBCT and CT» appears

What you opened is a 2D radiograph (PaX-i3D units also take panoramics and cephalograms), not the volume. You need the CBCT exported from Ez3D-i.

What you can do next

With the CBCT open you have the axial, coronal and sagittal slices, the 3D render, the panoramic, cross-sections per tooth, the TMJ, the airway, the simulated cephalogram and the superimposition of two CBCTs of the same patient, plus a PDF report. All measurements are indicative. See all features.

Common questions

Do I need Ez3D-i or the Vatech viewer?

No. tresD DICOM opens the exported DICOM files directly in the browser, on Windows, Mac and Linux.

Which compression should I choose when exporting?

«Uncompressed» if it is there; otherwise «Lossless». tresD DICOM opens both.

Does it work on a Mac?

Yes, in Safari, Chrome, Edge or Firefox. See also the Mac guide.

Is the CBCT uploaded to the internet?

No. The files are read and processed on your own computer; they are not sent to any server.

Is it free?

Yes: no sign-up, no licences and no limit on studies.
