Open an Acteon CBCT with nothing to install

Acteon CBCTs (X-Mind trium) are stored in AIS, Acteon Imaging Suite, and exported as DICOM as a folder with several hundred files. tresD DICOM opens them in your browser, also on a Mac, with nothing to install and without uploading the study anywhere.

How to export from AIS

AIS stores exams in its own format; to open them in another program they must be exported as DICOM. There are two ways:

🖥️ AIS · Acteon Imaging Suite
☰ right-click the CBCT → Export DICOMDIR — folder → «Select Folder» → «OK»
💿 Create Patient CD icon — new folder or CD; «Uncompressed»
☐ Viewer — can stay unticked

The folder ends up with several hundred .dcm files, one per slice. If a DICOMDIR or the Acteon viewer comes too, it does not matter: choose the whole folder and tresD DICOM finds the images by itself.

Step by step

  1. Copy the folder to your computer

If you received it on a CD or USB stick, copy the whole folder, for example to the desktop. Reading straight from the CD is slow and can fail halfway through loading.

  2. Open tresD DICOM

Go to tresddicom.com/app with Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox. No sign-up and nothing to install.

  3. Choose the whole folder

Click «📁 DICOM folder» and choose the folder with the .dcm files. You can also drag it onto the window. If you received it as a ZIP or RAR, use the button next to it: no need to unzip it.

tresD DICOM start screen with the DICOM folder and ZIP / RAR buttons
  4. Wait for it to load

Slices appear while the files arrive. If the volume does not fit in the graphics card, it is reduced automatically; the panoramic, the TMJ and the cross-sections per tooth are read at the original resolution.

If it does not open

«This is not the CBCT» appears

You chose the viewer folder or a stray file. Open again and choose the folder with the .dcm files.

It says you opened only the DICOMDIR

That file is the index; the images are next to it. Open again and choose the whole folder that contains it.

It says it cannot find DICOM images

Ask the clinic or imaging centre to export the CBCT as DICOM from AIS: right-click the CBCT → Export DICOMDIR, or the Create Patient CD icon with «Uncompressed».

What you can do next

With the CBCT open you have the axial, coronal and sagittal slices, the 3D render, the panoramic, cross-sections per tooth, the TMJ, the airway, the simulated cephalogram and the superimposition of two CBCTs of the same patient with a colour map of the differences, plus a PDF report. All measurements are indicative. See all features.

Common questions

Do I need AIS or the Acteon viewer?

No. AIS exists for Windows and Mac, but to view the CBCT exported as DICOM with tresD DICOM you do not need to install anything.

Should I tick «Viewer» when exporting?

It is not needed. If the viewer comes anyway, choose the whole folder: tresD DICOM leaves the program aside.

Does it work on a Mac?

Yes, in Safari, Chrome, Edge or Firefox. See also the Mac guide.

Is the CBCT uploaded to the internet?

No. The files are read and processed on your own computer; they are not sent to any server.

Is it free?

Yes: no sign-up, no licences and no limit on studies.
