Open a Carestream CBCT with nothing to install
The CD or USB stick of a Carestream CBCT (CS 8100 3D, CS 8200 3D, CS 9300, CS 9600) carries the images and a program that only runs on Windows. With tresD DICOM you open them in your browser, also on a Mac, without installing that program and without uploading the study anywhere.

What is on the CD or USB stick
An export from CS 3D Imaging, Carestream's program, usually contains this (names may vary slightly between versions):
tresD DICOM does not need any program: just choose the whole folder. The viewer finds the DICOM images by itself and ignores everything else (programs, indexes, PDF reports).
Step by step
Copy the CD or USB stick to your computer
Copy the whole folder, for example to the desktop. Reading straight from the CD is slow and, with large CBCTs, it can fail halfway through loading.
Open tresD DICOM
Go to tresddicom.com/app with Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox. No sign-up and nothing to install.
Choose the whole folder
Click «📁 DICOM folder» and choose the folder you copied: the top one, not
ViewData.exeor theDICOMDIRon its own. You can also drag it onto the window. If you received it as a ZIP or RAR, use the button next to it: no need to unzip it.
Wait for it to load
Slices appear while the files arrive. Large-field CS 9600 scans (over a thousand 0.15 mm slices) are reduced automatically so that they fit in the graphics card; the panoramic, the TMJ and the cross-sections per tooth are read at the original resolution.
If it does not open
«This is not the CBCT» appears
You chose the program folder or a stray file (the index, an installer). Open again and choose the top folder.
It says it cannot find DICOM images
That CD carries the study only in the format of Carestream's program. Ask the clinic or imaging centre to export the volume as DICOM: in CS 3D Imaging, the volume export with the CT (one file per slice) format and the same resolution as the original. Compressed or uncompressed, both open.
The slices look very dark or very bright
Drag with the left mouse button on a slice to adjust brightness and contrast.
What you can do next
With the CBCT open you have the axial, coronal and sagittal slices, the 3D render, the panoramic, cross-sections per tooth, the TMJ, the airway, the simulated cephalogram and the superimposition of two CBCTs of the same patient, plus a PDF report. All measurements are indicative. See all features.
Common questions
Do I need Windows or to install CS 3D Imaging?
No. tresD DICOM runs in the browser, on Windows, Mac and Linux, and also on iPad with the study in a ZIP. Carestream's program (CS 3D Imaging and its CD viewer) only runs on Windows.
Is the CBCT uploaded to the internet?
No. The files are read and processed on your own computer; they are not sent to any server.
Does it open Carestream's compressed DICOM?
Yes. Carestream usually exports images with lossless compression (JPEG Lossless) and tresD DICOM opens them just like uncompressed ones.
What about the very large CS 9600 scans?
Those too. If the volume does not fit in the graphics card, it is reduced automatically when opened; the panoramic, the TMJ and the cross-sections per tooth are read at the original resolution.
Is it free?
Yes: no sign-up, no licences and no limit on studies.
