Open a Planmeca CBCT with nothing to install

Planmeca CBCTs (ProMax 3D, Viso G5 and G7) are exported from Romexis. With tresD DICOM you open them in your browser, on Windows or Mac, without installing Romexis or its viewer and without uploading the study anywhere.

What a CBCT exported with Romexis looks like

Romexis can export the volume as DICOM in two ways, and tresD DICOM opens both:

A single file

The whole CBCT in one large file of hundreds of MB (the «Single Multi Frame DICOM File» option).

One file per slice

Hundreds of small files, one per axial slice (the «Set of Single Frame DICOM Files» option).

📁 Exported folder, CD or USB stick
📄 the study — one large file, or hundreds of small files
📁 Romexis Viewer — Planmeca's viewer, if exported with it

Sometimes the files have no .dcm extension, or come with the Romexis Viewer. It does not matter: tresD DICOM recognises the images by their content, not their name, and ignores the program.

Step by step

  1. Copy the folder to your computer

If you received it on a CD or USB stick, copy the whole folder, for example to the desktop. Reading straight from the CD is slow and, with large CBCTs, it can fail halfway through loading.

  2. Open tresD DICOM

Go to tresddicom.com/app with Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox. No sign-up and nothing to install.

  3. Choose the whole folder

Click «📁 DICOM folder» and choose the study folder, even if it holds a single file. You can also drag it onto the window. If you received it as a ZIP or RAR, use the button next to it: no need to unzip it.

tresD DICOM start screen with the DICOM folder and ZIP / RAR buttons
  4. Wait for it to load

Slices appear while the data arrives. Full-head Viso scans (about a thousand slices of a thousand by a thousand pixels, around 2 GB) are reduced automatically so that they fit in the graphics card; the panoramic, the TMJ and the cross-sections per tooth are read at the original resolution.

If it does not open

«This is not the CBCT» appears

You chose the Romexis Viewer folder or a stray file. Open again and choose the study folder.

It says it cannot find DICOM images

Ask the clinic or imaging centre to export the volume as DICOM: in Romexis 5, Output → Export Volume; in Romexis 6, the Export icon at the top right. In the «3D Export» window, DICOM format (a single file or one per slice, both work) and original resolution.

Only one image opens

A 2D image was exported (a panoramic, an X-ray or a single slice), not the volume. tresD DICOM is a CBCT and CT viewer: it needs the complete 3D volume.

What you can do next

With the CBCT open you have the axial, coronal and sagittal slices, the 3D render, the panoramic, cross-sections per tooth, the TMJ, the airway, the simulated cephalogram and the superimposition of two CBCTs of the same patient, plus a PDF report. All measurements are indicative. See all features.

Common questions

Do I need Romexis or the Romexis Viewer?

No. tresD DICOM opens the DICOM exported by Romexis directly in the browser. Planmeca has its own free viewer for Windows and Mac (Romexis Viewer), but tresD DICOM needs nothing installed.

Does it open Planmeca's single (multiframe) file?

Yes, and also the one-file-per-slice export. Whichever the clinic chooses works.

Does it work on a Mac?

Yes, in Safari, Chrome, Edge or Firefox, on Intel or Apple Macs (M1, M2, M3…). See also the Mac guide.

Is the CBCT uploaded to the internet?

No. The files are read and processed on your own computer; they are not sent to any server.

Is it free?

Yes: no sign-up, no licences and no limit on studies.
